The Farm
"In an unprepossessing side street off North End Road sits the unprepossessing-looking Farm. But step through the doors of this converted pub and things improve dramatically, with a cosy front section featuring plenty of stretch-out sofas gathered around a large, square bar. The restaurant area is perched at the back of the building, and comes complete with a pianist to aid digestion. The look is all dark wood and velvet panelling, but the mood is brightened by floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on to a white-painted brick wall (nicer than it sounds, especially when the fairy lights come on after dark). Service is young, but eager to please, with a surfeit of smiling faces; one of the waitresses moonlights as in-house chanteuse at weekends. The menu is well thought out, with plenty of emphasis on sourcing. Succulent loin of Elwy Valley spring lamb with roast cherry tomatoes, baked aubergine and spiced couscous was a tender, well-balanced combination. Puds are the usual roll-call (tarte tatin, crème brûlée). An intense chocolate tart made the sofas in the bar all the more welcoming afterwards." Time Out
